Overview

Goldbelt, Incorporated is an urban, Alaska Native, for-profit corporation with offices in Juneau, Alaska and Herndon, Virginia. Its primary purpose is to manage assets and conduct business for the benefit of its 3,900 Alaska Native shareholders.

 

SUMMARY:

Goldbelt Transportation is seeking a Deckhand. Assists with vessel operations including maintenance and application of emergency procedures for the safety of the vessel and its passengers. This position can be full-time, part-time or intermittent. 

Qualifications

NECESSARY SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:

  • Knowledge of and ability to apply emergency and fire regulations, emergency procedures, emergency equipment, and systems applicable to vessel operation.
  • Knowledge of proper vessel handling and docking.
  • Basic knowledge of vessel maintenance.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with other employees.
  • Ability to work directly with the public, providing information and assistance on a daily basis.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • AND One (1) to two (2) years of maritime industry experience.
  • Current CPR and first aid certificates
  • Drug testing required

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Previous experience on a passenger vessel.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Vessel with a passenger capacity up to 100.
  • Exposure to inclement weather conditions and potential rough seas.
  • Physically fit to perform strenuous work and able to lift up to 50 lbs. on an ongoing basis.
  • Must be able to lift up to 80 lbs. on an occasional basis.

Responsibilities

JOB DUTIES:

  • Responsible for line handling, taking on fuel and water, handling of gangways, removal of trash and basic vessel and engine maintenance.
  • Functions as one of the key crew members when instituting emergency procedures, following the emergency checklist and explaining any deviation from the latter.
  • Applies knowledge of and explains the first actions to take in the event of man overboard and vessel flooding.
  • Assists with training crew members during periodic drills.
